Susan Clements was born in Petersburg, Virginia. She spent her youth in Mobile, Alabama. She then called Greensburg, Pa. her home until she moved to the Hampton Roads area in 1999. She attended New York School of Interior Design; Seton Hill College; Greensburg Institute of Technology. Susan's experience includes, draftsperson /designer, CAD operator and project manager in the corporate environment. Susan also worked as the Designer in a custom drapery shop and was a small business owner. Most recently she has been a design consultant with Thomasville and Ethan Allen in Virginia Beach. Her hobbies include gardening, cooking, travel, art and re-purposing vintage finds. She also demonstrated spinning and weaving at colonial festivals.
Susan's favorite book is "Like Water for Chocolate " by Laura Esquivel.
Her favorite movie is "A Good Year "a Ridley Scott movie with Russell Crow. The tag line is: "Sometimes it takes a change of scenery to have a change of heart."
The most challenging and satisfying project she worked on was as manager for the renovation of corporate offices. She worked with the owners and management team to design the space. The project included designing custom cabinets to house equipment and storage. Because it was an open landscape environment it required custom designed partitions to create separation for executive areas. She oversaw this project from bid to construction and coordinated installation for all trades and finishes.
Susan's favorite project was for a business executive and her partner who moved from a gated community to a waterfront renovated ranch with four acres on the bay. The project began in the sun-room and evolved into consulting for every space to incorporate the client's existing furnishings and extensive art collection. Susan oversaw the installation of new furnishings, additional art, accessories, rugs, custom bedding and window treatments to complete the space.
Susan's favorite thing about her job is assisting clients in developing a plan to achieve their unique living space. She enjoys the collaborative selection of furnishings and accessories including window treatments to achieve the home of their dreams.
One of the most important rules of design is "form follows function." Susan's goal is to help her client understand and see their final goal. She likes to get to know her clients objectives by asking key questions and seeing the existing space. With the client's input, we put together a finished space that is reflective of their lifestyle. I enjoy incorporating family treasures along with new items to bring about a cohesive space that has a balance of color, design and esthetics to transform the space into a comfortable livable environment.
